Aokiji (Kuzan) made his first appearance in One Piece series during the Drum Island Arc in episode 570 (Short Summary) as a Fleet Admiral. He’s the current user of Hie Hie no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to create, control, and become ice at will. Always cool and calm by nature just like his devil fruit having a complex personality hinted by his first interaction with Straw Hat Pirates shows he is not a person to be taken lightly. Thats the reason why he was given an opportunity to become Fleet Admiral but unfortunately the fight between Akainu and Aokiji resulted in favour of Akainu . Now, Aokiji has to work under him but that was something not acceptable to our Former Admiral Aokiji. So he revoked his title as an Admiral in episode 570 (Short Summary). Currently, he is pursuing his own intentions and dream by working under Marshall D. Teach [BlackBeard Pirates]. He is the 10th Titanic Captain of Blackbeard Fleet.

Age and Height

Aokiji aka Kuzan is the youngest Admiral at the age of 47 years pre-timeskip and currently 49 years old, his height is around 2.98 meters (9 feet 7 inches). Slightly shorter than other 2 Admirals and shortest among Blackbeard Pirates.

Devil Fruit

Hie Hie no Mi Devil Fruit possessed by Aokiji is a rare Logia-type Devil Fruit, which grants its user the power to transform into, create, and control Ice. With the power to manipulate ice at will, he can shape it into various forms, from deadly weapons to impenetrable barriers.

Mastery over Devil Fruit

His mastery extends to the ability to generate ice seemingly out of thin air, allowing him to flood the battlefield with freezing cold. Among his most devastating techniques is Ice Age, a move that can instantly freeze vast areas, including the ocean itself, reshaping the environment to his advantage. He can also create and constructs like clones or animals from ice. With the ability to cover himself in ice for added defense and even walk on water by freezing its surface, Aokiji stands as a chilling reminder of the power that comes with mastery over a Logia-type Devil Fruit.

Connections

Straw Hat Pirates

While Aokiji’s connections with the Straw Hat Pirates is not as direct as some other characters, he shares a significant connection with one of their members, Nico Robin. During the events of the Enies Lobby Arc, Aokiji encounters Robin, who is being pursued by the Marines for her knowledge of the Void Century. Rather than arresting her Aokiji offers her a chance to live acknowledging the injustices she has faced and the weight of her burden. After the Paramount War incident Aokiji is speculated to have an eye on Robin and the Straw Hat crew from a distance, perhaps offering his support in subtle ways. He also offer Luffy the opportunities to escape or avoid conflict during Enies Lobby showcasing a level of respect for his resolve and convictions.

Captain Smoker

Aokiji’s connection with Smoker, a Marine Vice Admiral, can be seen from their shared history within the Marines and their interactions during various events throughout the One Piece series. Their working styles is different, where Aokiji becomes independent after leaving Marines while Smoker still continues to serve as a loyal dog of marines even after knowing the dark truths of the One Piece World. Their ideals and beliefs share some common site like staying by the side of justice, whether under the tag of Marine or not. Aokiji and Smoker may not have a history of direct assistance while they share more ground as comrades in arms.

BlackBeard Pirates

Marines keep an eye on Yonko just just like Drake is doing on Kaidou this could be the reason Aokiji (Kuzan) joined Blackbeard Aka Marshall D. Teach. He part be a part of SWORD (a secret group of Marines that works for the World Government and keeps the track of working of Four Emperors). Another reason could be he may be interested in knowing the history of Void Century. He knows one thing for sure that Blackbeard is potentially one of the biggest threat to the world right now, Blackbeard wants to sit over the Empty Throne of King of the Pirates and this thing brings the truth of history of 800 year old Black Century with it. This can also be believed from the reason why he spares Nico Robin life. There can be some more persons alive who can read Poneglyphs. Blackbeard can have one of them. One more reason could be after getting defeated by Akainu, he had work under him which is something he doesn’t want. Blackbeard offered him power and freedom which marines lack. Now he can pursue his ambition without any interference even though it will bring a darker path to his future, but he can change his path anytime just like pirates always do.

Revolutionary Army

Aokiji’s connections with Revolutionary Army can be stated by the incidents that after he left marines, the plans of Revolutionary Army were not perfectly carried out as Sabo got caught at Marineford. He probably knows about revolutionaries going to attack in world summit, and doesn’t want to get involved against his own allies. These speculations can be wrong but here are some more stronger evidences which could change the mind. In Ennies Lobby arc, Aokiji cleared the name of StrawHat Pirates from the list, this could be done by marines either to cover up their reputation but despite being present over there during the incident he led Starwhat’s to flee away, indirectly helping them. Being a current Admiral it was his duty to arrest them after so much chaos. And this was his third time , first time was when he helped Robin to espace Ohara and second was letting them go away after being attacked by them during his first encounter with Luffy and his crew. Also why would Kuma send Robin to Dragon, all these stories can be interlinked. He might know about the connections between Garp, Dragon and Luffy that’s why he let them go everytime. Also during the Marineford Summit War arc, he froze the whole ocean into ice, paving a way for Whitebeard Pirates to come inside. He also saved Luffy’s life there when he almost attacked the admirals, knowing the consequences of Akainu and Kizaru attacks, he managed to save the moment by making a childish play with Luffy and letting one of Whitebeard’s pirate to come, save and take his place instead. All these blunders couldn’t make any sense at such a time when situation was most critical. Indirectly he is helping Dragon by saving Luffy and Ace life. Blackbeard’s intentions were bad from the starting, Dragon know he cannot accomplish his mission alone. So he may be the one giving orders to Kuzan to follow Blackbeard, helping Luffy indirectly by making his future path less complicated.

How Did Aokiji Lose His Leg

Aokiji lost his left leg during a 10 day long battle on the island of Punk Hazard against Akainu (Sakazuki), another Admiral of the Navy. They fought for the position of Fleet Admiral and during the intense battle, Aokiji’s leg was permanently damaged by Akainu’s magma powers. Which resulted in clear cut win of Akainu. the battle Aokiji left the Navy and became a Blackbeard Pirate.

Aokiji’s Role In One Piece

Aokiji role and true intentions can be discovering the Void Century, working for SWORD, helping Revolutionary Army or becoming a greater power himself. The One Piece story is unpredictable. We always see something enexpexted coming. These are the possibilities as for now –

• Nico Robin may not be the only one who is interested is the lost history of past. Aokiji might be interested in it too that’s why he show special interest in people of Ohara. Right now as per BlackBeard orders Aokiji has kidnapped Charlotte Pudding (daughter of Big Mom), who has the ability to read Poneglyphs. She is one among the 3 who can decipher Poneglyphs.
• The world government is always one step ahead of every danger that’s why the secret agent role can be assigned to Aokiji.
• Revolutionaries are not some mere persons to be ignored, this underground organization is the most prominent and fearsome authority of the One Piece World. They always seems to have a plan up their sleeves. Just like world government they have their connections in marine too, nobody knows how high it can be. Mastermind Monkey D. Dragon is one of the most intelligent person in the story and yet his true powers are to be revealed.
• Kuzan may be working as a undercover dog for right now. But no one knows when the story will make a twisted turn. He wanted to get the title of Fleet Admiral that’s why he fought in first place but victory of one was definite. So, Kuzan may be waiting for his opportunity to take the revenge from Sakazuki.
