Here are 5 underrated anime that didn’t get the spotlight they deserved but honestly, each of them hits in its own way. These aren’t “hidden gems” just for the label. They’re legit good, who just got buried under louder titles or dropped at the wrong time.
Some anime blow up for the weirdest reasons and while others drop quietly, deliver bangers and no one notices. That’s unfair if you ask me, tbh. This post isn’t about the big names or trending hype. This is for the underdogs — the shows that hit deep, go hard and just vibe different but somehow slipped under everyone’s radar. You want something fresh, here’s where you start.
1
Erased (Boku dake ga Inai Machi)
Emotional mystery

Its not some 500 episode epic. Its short, sharp and emotionally loaded .At first glance it looks like a time travel mystery & yeah, it is. But it’s also about childhood trauma, regret and trying to actually fix things instead of just whining about them. The pacing is tight and atmosphere is haunting. There’s one scene when young Satoru figures out the abuse behind the classroom smile. Hell yeah thats pure goosebumps. No action, no music just raw realization. People still remember this show years later for this scene. The last episodes gets mixed reactions, the overall journey is absolutely worth watching. If you like stuff that sits with you for a while after watching, this one deserves your attention.
2
The Great Pretender
Stylish cons and slick storytelling

This anime had Netflix gold written all over it but i dont know why barely anyone talks about it. This one is slickest, most stylish anime I have ever seen. It’s about con artists, big international heists and wild locations. If you’re into Lupin III, catch me up with this or just love watching charismatic tricksters play rich people like a fiddle then again this one’s for you. Stylish cons, emotional arcs, global settings every arc feels like a mini movie. The art style is bold like actual color theory was used and the soundtrack is pure vibe. Think Ocean’s Eleven meets Cowboy Bebop and what really sells it is the character depth. Every “con” is tied to someone’s backstory, trauma or motive. So it’s not just cool tricks alone its emotionally layered. If you want something different that looks and feels premium but didn’t get the hype it deserved, this is it.
3
Paranoia Agent (Mousou Dairinin)
Brain melting weirdness

Directed by Satoshi Kon (the guy behind Perfect Blue and Paprika), this show shows collective anxiety, societal pressure and straight-up mental breakdowns—all wrapped around a mystery involving a kid on rollerblades beating people with a bat. If it Sounds dumb, well then It’s not instead It’s genius. This anime is straight-up unhinged in the best way possible. Its weird, its uncomfortable and it’s not trying to be your friend. That’s exactly why it’s brilliant.
Then, Why It Got Overlooked: It was too ahead of its time. Dropped in 2004, long before psychological breakdowns and social pressure became “cool” topics in anime. Plus, it wasn’t exactly easy to market a bat wielding phantom kid. Each episode feels like a different mental trip. One moment it’s a detective drama, the very next its surreal, dream like chaos. It’s more about what it makes you feel than what actually happens. Most people skip it because it’s “too strange.” That’s their loss. If you are a fan of uncertainty like me then this one is for you.
4
Eden of the East (Higashi no Eden)
Political thriller with a memory wipe twist

This one got buried way too fast. This show had the kind of opening that hooks you in the first 30 seconds. A dude wakes up in front of the White House, Naked. With a gun in one hand and a phone loaded with millions in digital cash in the other & what else, no memory. Just vibes & somehow, it makes total sense the more you watch. Both the series and its movies are on Crunchyroll and Funimation (last checked). But double check because this one randomly disappears off platforms every few months like its part of the mystery. Eden of the East is one of those shows that balances mystery, tech, politics and lowkey romance without overcomplicating things. It feels cinematic like it was meant to be more than just a one season wonder. The concept? A game where select individuals are tasked with “saving Japan” using unlimited funds. Some try, some abuse it. It gets messy fast. Its smart, stylish and weirdly touching. But for some reason, it just… disappeared from most lists but you don’t sleep on it.
5
91 Days
Cold-blooded mafia revenge

If you like shows that don’t feel like anime, this one’s for you. Short, sharp and bloody. 91 Days doesn’t care about your feelings—it just wants to tell a tight revenge story and dip. This one is straight up cinematic. Think oldschool mafia, revenge, betrayal—Godfather vibes in anime form & yet, no one really talks about it anymore. Which is wild because 91 Days is clean. It’s set in the Prohibition era (like 1920’s America), and shows a guy named Avilio who comes back to his hometown with one goal: burn everything down. He infiltrates the mafia family that killed his own and it’s not just “pew pew shootout” drama— it’s a slow burn calculated revenge. Every smile hides a plan. Each toast is laced with tension. The art style is grounded and the soundtrack is haunting, the pacing is actually smart. It doesn’t waste your time with filler. Just straight up tension and emotional weight from start to finish.
Different genres, different energies but all criminally underrated. If you’re tired of scrolling through endless “Top 10” lists with the same big names then this is your break from the noise. These shows might not trend on your feed but they’ll absolutely sit with you after the credits roll.
Go give them the love they didn’t get when they dropped. They’ve been waiting.
